Forensic Art

This summarizes the process of creating a forensic facial reconstruction of unidentified human remains.

The fragmented skull was scanned to obtain an initial 3D model of the remains.

The skull scan was brought into ZBrush and the geometry was cleaned up for 3D modeling while ensuring the preservation of distinguishable anatomical details. Missing portions of the cranium and mandible were sculpted using approximations based on forensic anthropologist and forensic odontologist reports, statistical averages, and knowledge of human anatomy.

Tissue depth markers were created in 3D and placed on the skull using forensic anthropologist’s approximation of individual’s racial background as well as statistical averages.

Final rendering of soft tissues over tissue depth markers was created in Procreate and Photoshop. Forensic anthropologist and forensic odontologist reports were used to approximate individual’s age, race, and overall appearance based on post-mortem interval.
